Revival RG-26
If you’re looking to get as close as possible to a boutique-grade guitar for minimal cash outlay, it hardly gets better than the RG-26. This small-bodied beauty from Chinese manufacture features all solid woods, a gloss finish, and sweet looking appointments. Running down the list we find neat wooden bindings on the body and neck, inlaid wood back and end stripes, a heel cap and rosewood headstock facing, and a perfectly rendered abalone rosette and fretboard dots. The construction is top notch in all areas, including the inner workings, where we see carefully shaped and sanded scalloped braces, tight joints, and not a stray speck of dust or glue. Playability-wise, the RG-26 rules thanks to its moderately slim neck, which sports a low action and well-shaped frets with smooth ends. The guitar’s intonation is excellent—thanks in part to the properly cut bone nut and compensated bone saddle—and its acoustic voice is crisp and open with good complexity and presence in the upper mids and highs. The RG-26 has what the company calls a “00 thin body shape,” which, though comfortable to get around on, is a limiting factor to both its volume and projection. But while the RG-26 doesn’t have the low-end mass of a dreadnought- or jumbo-sized instrument (which is something that solo performers tend to look for), it is ideally suited for recording. Slap a good mic on this guitar and revel in the pure and balanced tones that come back at you. Built by people who obviously care about attention to detail, the result speaks for itself and the RG-26 gets an Editors’ Pick Award

The Goodtime 2 Classic banjo is fast and easy to play due to the slender, low profile, rock maple neck. Farewell to Jason Castro from Instrument Alley.... As Jason Castro left American Idol last week, many of us felt that he was the correct choice. Although Jason had a strong following, no doubt the majority was made up of hormone driven teenie-bobbing, dreadnought loving young female fans; the quality of his song choices and a few misteps couldn't sustain Castro's dream. Even though Jason is gone may will remember his rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow as their favorite and one of Jason Castro's shining moments on American Idol.

Back in '63, Danelectro's "model 1449" would soon become the rage of garage bands and pros alike. Why? Tone! Danelectro's pickups, ingeniously housed in lipstick tubes, quickly became known for their "signature twang." The guitar bodies were lightweight and featured a hollow inner chamber which made them sonically "alive"...unlike traditional solid bodies. Fast forward 45 years. Danelectro re-issues this prized guitar...now calling it the Dano '63. Our first task in bringing back this great guitar was to replicate the 60s era Lipstick pickups. That meant aquiring dozens of old Lipsticks, tearing them apart, and uncoveing their secrets. The resulting reissue pickups are hot and sweet, and are soncially accurate to the original 60s pickups. Next the tuners and bridge were upgraded, to make the guitar as fun to play as it is to hear! And to make it fun to look at, we combed the old paint archives for just the right "retro" colors to captured the soul and spirit of the original 60s instruments.
